Disabled Veterans - Motor Vehicle Exemption

Effective starting tax year 2021, the laws of Virginia provide that one motor vehicle owned and used primarily by or for a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States or the Virginia National Guard who has been rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency pursuant to federal law with a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability shall be exempt from taxation.

This exemption is available to taxpayers who qualify under the provisions of the State Code of Virginia, Title 58.1.3506. These provisions are as follows:

  • A Disabled Veteran who has been certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs to have a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability, or 100% by means of individual un-employability, service connected, permanent and totally disabled.
  • You must submit a copy of your letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs certifying this disability to our office. If you are already receiving 100% Veterans real estate exemption and have provided our office with your VA letter previously, you do NOT need to provide it again.

The exemption is only applicable for automobiles or pickup trucks. The vehicle must be used by or for the veteran and titled to the veteran or the veteran’s spouse.

Please note: This reduction is only for Disabled Veterans. Surviving Spouses are unable to qualify for the reduction.
