Individual Personal Property Tax

Personal Property Taxes

Prince George County levies a tax each calendar year on personal property with "situs" in the County. Personal Property taxes on automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, low speed vehicles, motor homes and trailers are prorated monthly. Boats are not prorated.

Active duty military personnel with a legal residence other than Virginia are exempt from the License fee and personal property taxes as allowed by United States Code, Title 50, Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act of 1940.

Effective starting tax year 2021, the Code of Virginia allowed for an exemption of one motor vehicle (automobiles or pickup trucks). Effective starting tax year 2013, the Board of Supervisors approved a reduced tax rate for Disabled Veterans on one motor vehicle owned and regularly used by the veteran. Qualifying veterans are allowed to qualify for the exemption or the reduced rate, however they can not receive both.

Mobile homes on temporary foundations are assessed as personal property by the Commissioner of the Revenue's office.

Prince George County will adjust assessments when necessary documentation is provided to our office. We offer a high mileage and body damage adjustment.

Prince George County prorates taxes on personal property taxes, excluding mobile homes and boats.

The Virginia General Assembly passed the Personal Property Tax Relief Act (PPTRA) in 1998. Code of Virginia Section 58.1-3523 et. seq. provides relief of personal property taxes.

Under the Prince George County Code, one motor vehicle owned or leased by a member of a county volunteer rescue squad, fire department or auxiliary police officer is eligible for a reduced rate.
