Registering To Vote

Who May Register to Vote

To be eligible to vote in Virginia a person must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Virginia.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Does not claim the right to vote in any other state.
  • Is not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law.
  • If convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored.

How to Register

Qualified U.S. citizens can register to vote by filling out a Virginia Voter Registration Application form from the State's Web site ( or a National Voter Registration application form.  These forms can be obtained and filled out at the County Registrar's Office or at any DMV in the State of Virginia.

When to Register

You may register to vote anytime of the year.  However, to participate in an upcoming election your registration application must be received before the specified registration deadlines:

  • General Elections – 22 days before elections
  • Primaries – 22 days before elections
  • Special Elections – 13 days before the elections
  • Special Elections called by the Governor – 7 days before the elections

Where to Register

Completed voter application registrations can be returned to the County Registrar's Office, Social Services Office, Health Department, Public Libraries or any Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
