Winter Preparedness


Prince George County Emergency Management and Public Safety officials urge citizens to be prepared for winter weather. Remember if an emergency or disaster strikes you should have enough supplies to maintain you and your family, including pets, for at least 72-hours.

Some winter weather HOME preparation tips include:

  • Store supplies in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers in case of evacuation
  • 3 – 5 day supply of water, staple foods, can opener (pet supplies)
  • Change of clothing and blankets for everyone
  • First aid kit
  • Medications, eye wear
  • Battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries
  • Weather alert radio
  • Car keys, money, credit cards
  • Toilet paper, soap, garbage bags, hand cleaner, sanitizer
  • Important documents

Remember to refresh these supplies every three to six months.

Some winter weather VEHICLE preparation tips include:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • Blankets / sleeping bag
  • High calorie foods such as protein bars, nuts, beef jerky, etc.
  • Extra clothing / coats
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Pocketknife
  • Toilet paper, garbage bags, hand cleaner, sanitizer
  • Waterproof matches
  • Bag of sand or clay cat litter (non-clumping type)
  • Shovel, windshield scraper, and brush
  • Tool kit
  • Rope
  • Booster cables
  • Compass
  • Road maps
  • Fluorescent and/or reflective cloth for distress signal
