Litter Reduction Program a Continued Success

Prince George, VA - The Prince George County Litter Reduction Program began in 2019 as a jail diversion program for low-level offenders. Driving along county roads, you probably have encountered orange trash bags lining the street. The program, administered by Prince George County Commonwealth Attorney, Riverside Criminal Justice Agency (RCJA) and Sheriff’s Office, allows offenders to perform community service to affect the community positively. In November alone, 188 bags of trash were collected.

On a recent sunny day along Laurel Spring Road, RCJA’s Litter Reduction Program Coordinator, Keith King supervised trash pick-up. King is a familiar face in the County, having served in the Prince George Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office. Community clean-up provides an opportunity for RCJA’s clients to take pride in their work. RCJA Director Denise Waff said, “The Litter Reduction Program is truly a win-win for Prince George.  Offenders give back to the community through public service, and the county landscape is preserved for all to enjoy.”

The program’s success is due to the collaborative work of these three Prince George County government agencies and the Virginia Department of Transportation, which provides and disposes of the orange garbage bags. Due to its success, the program has been replicated in Hopewell.

Community trash pick-up takes place every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday throughout the County and the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. The pick-up schedule up is based on need. Citizens can provide tips on littered roads to the Riverside Criminal Justice Agency by calling 804-733-2760.
