North Elementary Celebrates America's Military During Special Veterans Day Drive-Thru Parade

On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, North Elementary School's community hosted a special drive-thru parade honoring America's armed forces ahead of the Veterans Day federal holiday on Thursday, November 11, 2021.

Students and staff waved American flags of varying sizes with a backdrop of crisp blue skies over the Old Stage Road campus as servicemembers in vehicles and motorcycles greeted the parade's spectators.

The parade also featured a heartwarming moment as Don Vtiple, founder of the Military Assistance Program, recognized wounded veteran and United States Marine Corps serviceman Justin Howard for his service to America. During a special presentation, Vtiple's organization presented Howard with a check for $10,000 to assist him and his family during the upcoming holiday season.

Prince George County Public Schools is well-known for its close connection with the military. As the Fort Lee military installation resides in Prince George, the division serves as the education partner of hundreds of military families in our community. In recent years, several of the district's schools have been recognized for their support of military families.

In 2020, David A. Harrison Elementary and William A. Walton Elementary were the latest PGCPS schools to receive a Virginia Purple Star Designation from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity of Military Children in recognition of both schools' commitment to serving students and families connected to the military. The two schools joined both North Elementary and L.L. Beazley Elementary Schools as Virginia Purple Star designees, with these two campuses receiving the honor in 2019.

Learn more about these Virginia Purple Star recipients in our press release from October 2020.

Full-res photos from the parade are available HERE and are approved for distribution.
