This message is a monthly update in 2021 to better inform our citizens and visitors to our website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

The due date for payment of personal property, real property and storm water taxes and fees was Wednesday, June 5 in the Office of the Treasurer.  The Board of Supervisors has waived penalty and interest until August 31, 2021.

National Night Out activities in Prince George County will be held Tuesday, August 3 from 5-9 p.m. at 26 different locations.

The Convenience Station at Union Branch Road will be closed Friday, August 13 for repairs to the site.  No trash will be accepted on this day, but the station will reopen for normal business hours on Saturday, August 14.

The Prince George County Department of Social Services and Police Department will coordinate a “Back to School Curbside Event” from 9 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Saturday, August 7 at Prince George High School.

The Virginia Sales Tax Holiday will be August 6-8 for discount pricing on school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness products and “Energy Star” and “WaterSense” products.

The Board of Supervisors will honor and recognize members of community who have volunteered during the COVID-19 pandemic at its August 10 meeting at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom.

The Prince George Food Bank at the Central Wellness Center is open Tuesdays & Fridays from 10 a.m. – 12:00 Noon.

The Prince George Farmers Market is open every Saturday in August from 8 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Scott Park, except for August 14 when the hours will be extended until 2 p.m. for Kid’s Day and the Greater Tomato Contest.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its only regular meeting this month on Tuesday, August 10 in the Boardroom.  The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

A Worksession will precede the August 10 BOS meeting to discuss the following items: (1) Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce Annual Report; and (2) Additional Wastewater Capacity.

The Board of Supervisors will hold a special Worksession at 4 p.m., Wednesday, August 25 in the Boardroom to discuss the following items: (1) Renovations to the Heritage Center; (2) Renovation to the Circuit Courtroom; (3) Scott Park Road Improvements; (4) Utility Rate adjustments; (5) Annual Property Assessments; (6) Battery Storage Policy; (7) Private Road Standards; (8) Growth in Residential Areas; (9) Veterans Memorial; (10) County Strategic Plan; (11) Exit 45 Plan; (12) Review of County Operations; (13) Staffing Requests; (14) Board of Supervisors Assessment Tool; (15) Merit Pay Plan; and (16) Grant application for a van for Senior Citizen programs.

Meetings and Worksessions in the Boardroom will be live streamed using YouTube Live, a free service, via the County channel.

Prince George School Board meets Monday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Boardroom.

Congressman McEachin will hold a “Virtual Mobile McEachin” by appointment, on Saturday, August 14 from 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The James River Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Directors will hold a virtual meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 19.

The Prince George Fire & EMS Advisory Board will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 19 at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom.

The Board of Zoning Appeals will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 23 in the Boardroom.

The Prince George Pastor’s Council will meet virtually at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 24.

The Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 26 in the Boardroom.

The USSSA Softball Tournament will be held August 28-29 at the Moore Sports Complex.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of August:

  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will hold two (2) public hearings: (1) Ordinance amendment to change the title of Fire & EMS Director to Chief; (2) Special Exception to permit a home occupation for the purpose of online sales and storage of products at 8910 Old Stage Road at the request of Jere Amidei, Jr.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will receive three reports: (1) VDOT report; and (2) Update on construction of the new elementary school; and (3) Dixie World Series wrapup.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider reappropriating outstanding June 2021 purchase orders.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider an Amendment/Increase to RCJA FY2022 Budget Based on Increased DCJS Community Corrections Grant Award.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider an authority to advertise a public hearing for Stormwater Fund bond proceeds.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider an appropriation for a School ESSER II Grant.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider an appropriation for School IDEA ARPA Part B 611 and 619.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider appropriating $400,000 for vehicles and school buses.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider revisions to the personnel policy.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider an appointment to the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its August 10 meeting will consider an Authorization to Advertise a Public Hearing to Amend §74-1 and §38-82 of the County Code to Change the Due Date for the 2nd Half of Real Estate Taxes and Stormwater Utility Fees from June 5 to May 5.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of August:

  • Donna Prince from Lexington, VA will be the new Prince George County Assessor beginning August 16.
  • The Route 460 water main extension is 95 percent complete; and the Route 156 water main extension is 33 percent complete.
  • Renovations to the Central Wellness Center should be completed this month.
  • Destination Church volunteers will continue this month their upgrades at the Social Services offices.
  • Scopes of work are being developed for future renovations to the Jefferson Park Volunteer Fire Station;  Prince George Volunteer Fire Station; Circuit Courtroom in the County Courthouse; Electrical system at the Emergency Crew Building; and expansion of the Fleet Garage.
  • Inter-governmental discussions on topics of general interest will continue among Prince George, Surry and Sussex counties.
  • Parks & Recreation will continue accepting registration for fall sports this month.
  • Staff is close to finalizing an agreement with a consultant to make recommendations on the future of Exit 45 along I-95.
  • Staff will interview this month consultants interested in developing an overall strategic plan for Prince George County.
  • Staff is accepting proposals from consultants to review the general operations of County Government.
  • Staff will be analyzing this month possible locations for the construction of a new convenience site for trash disposal.
  • Staff will continue to analyze a proposal to change the due dates for the payment of real estate and personal property taxes.
  • Staff will begin developing a list of capital projects to be submitted to the Board of Supervisors for the FY ’23 Budget.
  • Prince George County will continue to participate in discussions regarding the establishment of a regional authority to regulate the sale of cigarettes and implement a tax as authorized by the General Assembly.
