This message is a monthly update in 2021 to better inform our citizens and visitors to our website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

Prince George County Government Offices will be closed Monday, February 15 in observance of President’s Day.  Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 16.

Prince George County Government remains in full mode of addressing the situation involving the coronavirus pandemic.  County Government offices will be closed to the public until March 1, with employees reporting. Two exceptions are Parks & Recreation classes and the fitness center on Old Stage Road. Members of the public needing to do business with County offices are encouraged to utilize telephone calls and email; and documents can be dropped off at outside boxes at various locations. 

Citizens are encouraged to continue to implement the federal and state guidelines for ‘social distancing,’ and the wearing of face coverings when entering all public buildings.

The Prince George Food Bank at the Central Wellness Center is open Tuesdays & Fridays from 10 a.m. – 12:00 Noon.  Donations are being accepted to assist with the heavy demand for food supplies since the coronavirus pandemic began last March.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its regular meetings this month on Tuesday, February 9 and Tuesday, February 23 in the Boardroom.  The meetings begin at 7 p.m.

A Worksession will precede the February 9 BOS meeting to discuss the following items: (1) Volunteer Tax Relief Ordinance; (2) Presentation by Prince George Volunteer Fire Department to operate Bingo machines inside the station to the public; (3) Discussion of establishment of citizen committees: Youth Task Force; Pastor Committee; Senior Citizens Task Force; and Inclusion Diversity Equality Cabinet; and (4) Discussion of Assessment Tool for the Board of Supervisors.

The Board of Supervisors will hold special meetings at 5 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 11 and 24 to discuss matters pertaining to the FY ’21 and FY ’22 budgets.

The Boardroom shall be open to the public for all meetings with restricted seating.  Social distancing is encouraged.  The audio in the hallway will remain on for people outside the boardroom.  Media will be allowed in the boardroom.

Meetings in the Boardroom will also be live streamed using YouTube Live, a free service, via the County channel.  https://www.youtube.com/c/princegeorgevirginia.

The Crater Health District will host two community COVID-19 testing sites this month:

  • Thursday, February 11 from 1-3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 24 from 10 a.m. – 12:00 Noon.

Both events will be at the Central Wellness Center parking lot, with participants being drive-up only.

The Burn Ban Law will go into effect February 15 and extend to April 30.  No burning can take place before 4 p.m. and that applies to campfires and brush burning.

The Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 25 in the Boardroom, using the same public participation guidelines as the Board of Supervisors meetings.

The Prince George Fire & EMS Advisory Committee will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 18 in the Boardroom.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 1 at Prince George High School.

The Crater Regional Workforce Development Board will meet virtually at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, February 25.

Riverside Regional Jail Finance Committee and full committee will meet beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 25.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of February:

  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will hold four public hearings: (1) Rezoning request at South Crater Road & Birdsong Road; (2) Special Exception request at South Crater Road & Birdsong Road; (3) Dedicating one cent on Real Estate tax for fire equipment; and (4) Amendment to dogs running at large ordinance.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will resume discussion regarding changing the polling place from the County Courthouse to Gregory Memorial Church.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will resume discussion on appointing members to the Planning Commission.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will receive five reports: (1) Monthly VDOT Report; (2) Annual Property Maintenance Report; (3) Renovation of the Central Wellness Center; (4) Fire & EMS Building projects; and (5) Procurement for Towing Policy.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will consider Personnel Policy revisions to the Procurement Policy.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will consider an appropriation of $347,122 to the School Division out of the Textbook Fund.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will consider an Award of Contract for a feasibility study for water infiltration mediation at the Heritage Center.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will consider an award of annual services contract for routine and emergency Utility repairs.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 9 meeting will consider an award of contract for route analysis and route selection for the Route 10 waterline extension.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 23 meeting will receive two reports: (1) Update on utility projects; (2) Update on the Utility Grant Assistance Program.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its February 23 meeting will receive 2020 annual reports from department heads.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of February:

  • Registration will get underway this month for youth baseball, softball and soccer hosted by the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • A card swipe system for entry into volunteer fire departments is now being installed.
  • Interviews will be held this month for the hiring of a new Director of Fire & EMS; Director of the Riverside Criminal Justice Agency; and Real Estate Assessor.
  • The Route 460 water main extension is 23 percent complete; and the Route 156 water main extension is 10 percent complete.
  • Planning is underway for this summer’s Dixie Softball World Series in Prince George County July 23-29.
