PRINCE GEORGE — A new elementary school is in the works for Prince George students.

On August 6, Prince George County Public Schools unanimously (5-0) approved plans of the schematic design of a new school to replace Walton Elementary School. The school is slated to open for the 2022-23 school year and will be located along Middle Road.

The plans, presented by Mosely Architects of Richmond, depict 40 classrooms for Pre-K through fifth grade, as well as several common areas, including a cafeteria, gymnasium, reading room, and music and art spaces. Classrooms for Pre-K through second grade will be the first floor, while third, fourth and fifth-grade classrooms will be housed on the second floor.

The Prince George County school board has taken no action regarding the name of the new school, Walton or otherwise.

Prince George County Schools will now proceed to the next steps in making the proposed school a reality. In December, the school board will review necessary documents, and will then begin to accept bids for the project in February 2021. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2021, to be completed in June 2022. The School will open in September 2022.
