Message from the County Administrator

December, 2019 

This message is a monthly update in 2019 to better update our citizens and visitors to our website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

County Government offices will be closed Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, December 26. 

County Government offices will also be closed Wednesday, January 1, 2020, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, January 2.

A ‘Boiled Water Advisory’ has been issued until further notice for the following neighborhoods and schools because of a water leak on Temple Avenue: Puddledock Road; Temple Avenue; Jefferson Point Apartments; Middle Road; The Meadows Subdivision; Prince George Drive; Birchett Estates; Branchester Lakes; Lee Acres; Rolling Meadows; Commons Drive; Laurel Spring Rd; Courts Drive (Court House area); Tinsley Charter; Baxter Ridge; Commonwealth Acres; Route 460; South Point Business Park; Clements Junior High; Prince George High School; Beazley Elementary; and Walton Elementary.

The Board of Supervisors will hold one regular meeting this month on Tuesday, December 10 at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom.

A Worksession will precede the December 10 meeting at 6 p.m.  Tentative topics include: (1) Presentation by the Public School Division on improvements to classrooms at Walton Elementary School; and (2) Special Exception provisions contained in County ordinances.

The Board of Supervisors will hold a Special Meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, December 9 in the Community Room of the Human Services Building.

The Board of Supervisors will also hold a Pre-Budget Worksession at 4 p.m. Monday, December 16 in the Boardroom.

A ‘Swearing-In’ Ceremony for all elected officials from the November General Election will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 17 in the Boardroom.

The first half of 2020 Real Estate taxes are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, December 5 in the Treasurer’s Office.

The Prince George County Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 4 on the Old Courthouse Lawn.

The Annual Prince George County Christmas Parade will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 7 around the Prince George County Courthouse Complex.

The Prince George Police Department will host ‘Wreath Laying’ ceremonies for fallen officers beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, December 6 at Merchant’s Hope Cemetery and Southlawn Memorial Park.

The James River Soil & Water Conservation District Farmer’s Breakfast and Recertification Class will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Tuesday, December 3 at the Chesterfield Central Library.

First Graders at Beazley Elementary School will decorate a tree and perform carols at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 3 in the lobby of the Administration Building.

A Neighborhood Meeting on a possible solar farm will be held from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 3 at Sycamore United Methodist Church.

The Prince George Business Roundtable will graduate its 2019 Class at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, December 4 at Nanny’s Restaurant.

The Capital Improvements Planning (CIP) Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 4 in the Kines Breakroom.

The Riverside Regional Jail Authority will hold a Finance Committee meeting and Regular Meeting on Thursday, December 5, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Jail’s Administrative Offices.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, December 5 at the Central Wellness Center.

The ‘Grand Illumination’ at Fort Lee will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, December 5 at the corner of Mahone Avenue and Battle Drive.

Richard Bland College will host a ‘Tree Lighting Celebration’ at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 5 at the Gazebo.

The 2019 Holiday Helper Open House kickoff will be held at 10 a.m., on Friday, December 6 at Battle Drive on Fort Lee.

The James House will host a ‘Holiday Celebration’ at 4:30 p.m., on Friday, December 6 at the administrative offices on Commons Drive.

‘Breakfast with Santa’ will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Saturday, December 7 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center on Old Stage Road.

The Burrowsville Volunteer Fire Department will host ‘Breakfast with Santa’ from 9 – 11 a.m. Saturday, December 7 at BVFD.

The ‘Holiday Boat Parade’ will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7 beginning at Jordan Point Yacht Haven.

Carson Volunteer Fire Department will hold its Annual Christmas Family Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7 at CVFD.

‘Pictures with Santa’ will be taken with family pets from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, December 8 at the Prince George Animal Services Center.

The Prince George Social Services Advisory Board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, December 9 in the Social Services Department administrative offices.

The Prince George County School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, December 9 in the Boardroom.

A ‘Winter Band Concert’ will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 10 at the Prince George High School Auditorium.

A ‘Caregivers Café’ will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 11 at the Petersburg Library.

‘Wreaths Across America Laying Ceremony’ will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, December 14 at Merchant’s Hope Cemetery.

Prince George TRIAD will hold its Holiday Luncheon at 12:00 Noon Monday, December 16 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center.

The Prince George Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 19 in the Boardroom.

‘Christmas Market’ will be at The Barns of Kanak from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, December 21.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of December:

  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will receive three reports (1) VDOT; (2) Auditor Robinson, Farmer, Cox; and (3) New Scott Park Master Plan.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will consider a resolution on the Consensus Agenda regarding Second Amendment Rights.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will consider appropriating $704,232.13 in Carry-Over Funds for the Public School Division.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will consider a Shoreline Agreement with the James River Association near Appomattox River Regional Park.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will consider revisions to the Position Control Chart.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will consider award of contract for architectural & engineering services at the Central Wellness Center.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will consider a Chief Elected Officials Consortium Agreement for the Crater Regional Workforce Development Board.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will again consider naming the walking trail behind the Central Wellness Center.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its December 10 meeting will hold three public hearings: (1) Lease of space for Prince George Rotary at the Central Wellness Center; (2) Special Exception to permit a riding school, riding stable, animal hospital, animal board place, veterinary  services and a gift shop at 12620 Johnson Road; and (3) Tax relief for the elderly & disabled.
  • Activities are beginning for various Parks & Recreation winter activities and registration will begin soon for spring events. Information can be received at www. http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.
  • Construction of stormwater projects in Birchett Estates and Cedar Creek will continue this month.
  • Prince George County, Fort Lee technology personnel working to implement new 9-1-1 agreement between the two entities.
  • Design work is underway for the construction of a new fire station at Jefferson Park.
  • Design work is underway for water extensions on Route 460 and Route 156; construction bids expected to be sought in December.
  • Design work is underway for the construction of a new Burn Building to provide extensive training for Fire & EMS personnel.
  • Staff has submitted a grant application to state officials seeking funding that will expand broadband throughout Prince George County.
  • Planning for the 2021 Dixie World Series in Prince George County will begin this month.
  • The Utility Department will continue to address odor issues at Fountain Ridge III subdivision.
