Clear skies ahead for Pecan Festival

After last year’s postponement due to a hurricane, RBC will play host to the event for a fourth time Saturday

PRINCE GEORGE — Last year, a hurricane forced the cancellation of the Pecan Festival at Richard Bland College.

On Saturday, with no heavy winds or rain in sight to chase it a second consecutive year, the fourth annual free festival will go on as plannedn the Grove at RBC.

The family friendly event celebrating the pecan will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The day will be chocked full of entertainment, food and drink, and more than 150 different vendors on hand.

Festival organizers say one of those vendors, Steam Bell beer Works, will debut its latest special brew called “Orange Peel Pale Ale.”

For younger visitors, there will be craft activities, face painting, games and bounce-houses. The Prince George Animal Control Department will bring its mobile pet-adoption services, as well.

Products being offered range from homemade pecan foods, soaps, jewelry, baked goods, specialty foods and clothing.

The food menu includes Hawaiian shaved ice, barbecue, crab cakes and other traditional favorites.

Music will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. by Groove Potion, and from 2 to 5 p.m. by Sweet Justice.

“The Pecan Festival proudly supports RBC students and the community, while helping to grow tourism in Virginia,” Jamie Camp, the festival director, said in a statement.

According to information provided by the college, RBC is home to the oldest and largest pecan groves in the commonwealth, with nearly 1,000 pecan trees. Each year the pecans are harvested and proceeds used to advance student success and maintain the groves.
